• CAMPING

Living indoors without fresh air quickly poisons the blood and makes people
feel tired and seedy and they don’t know why.”
Lord Baden Powell

Camping is what we’re all about. We love it! There’s just nothing like waking to birdsong, unzipping your tent, and being outside straight away. Cool grass under bare feet; the sun warming you as the kettle whistles for your morning cuppa…ahh, take me there now! We’ve been going camping ever since we were kids and know what we want from a good site – hopefully, all our experience goes into the little things that make coming to Woodfire great.

Our two sites are both on stunning private Estates in the heart of the South Downs National Park. Each has a different character, but both have the generous welcome, great facilities and special Woodfire touches that will make your stay.  Find out more below.

Woodfire at Westerlands

This ex-racehorse paddock is in a very special spot in West Sussex, with spectacular sunsets and glorious views of the wooded South Downs hills, rolling away into the distance.

We have hot showers, campfires and wood-fired cooking, with pre-pitched tents available for hire. The track leading directly off the campsite leads up on to the  South Downs Way, with more fantastic views in all directions, some as far as the sea.

There are four lovely pubs within walking distance, with great food and beer gardens and an amazingly well-stocked village shop. Ancient market towns, castles and stately homes; wetlands and sandy beaches as well as great museums, petting farms and fun parks are all just a short drive away.

Woodfire at Firle: The Field

New for 2023, we’re bringing the full Woodfire experience to a stunning field at Firle for 28 days only! Same beautifully-crafted hot showers and regenerative toilets (my new term for compost – click here for rant); same incredible views of the South Downs (from a different spot, obviously) and Firle Place; same great food cooked every night over fire. If you’ve been to Westerlands before, it’s exactly the same deal – a large, flat field with parking right next to it; wheelbarrows for carting gear on and off; campfires and campervans allowed. The crystal clear drinking water is piped straight from a nearby borehole on the Estate, to the powerful hot showers and sinks.

Woodfire at Firle: The Fold (by way of the Old Coach Road)

Nestled in a fold of the South Downs hills just off Firle Beacon on the famous South Downs Way, this extraordinary location is available for exclusive hire this season.  It can hold around 70 people and has two fabulous hot showers, two lovely compost loos,  campfires and a sheltered seating area. The site is reached along a pot-holey farm track for those arriving by car – well worth it for the breathtaking views.

Set on the 500-year-old Firle Estate in East Sussex, it’s easy walking distance to stately homes and places of interest, including two pubs with great food and beer gardens, a magical cafe garden; an open farm with shop and garden nursery and the lovely village of Firle.

Again, just a short drive away are ancient market towns, castles and stately homes; dramatic chalk cliffs and beaches, great museums, outward-bounds activities and fun parks.
